I get a lot of my interests in making things pretty from my mom. She always knew how to throw a great party, decorate a beautiful home, DIY things, cook a great meal, and dress nice! She showed me how to make sugar scrubs and I have been making them for myself and giving them as gifts for years since then. My favorite is peppermint because the essential oil makes your skin tingle a bit!

What I love about them is that its a practical gift, its good for your skin (you should be exfoliating once a week), and its customizable! Thats why I did not include specifics in the recipe above. I am going to link ingredients below and suggest some combinations for a great sugar scrub! This is not an exact science, you can add a bit more of sugar to make it grainier, but I do not recommend adding to much olive oil as it can separate and make your bath tub a bit slippery.

1. Sugar

You can buy white sugar at any grocery store, doesn't matter what brand.

2. Dr. Bronner's pure Castile soap

This is the priciest ingredient, but it will last you forever!! I am linking the unscented here, but will link the different versions for different recipes below.

3. Olive oil

Again doesn't matter what kind, I have also used coconut oil before, but coconut oil will stop up your drain so I do not suggest using it.

4. Essential oil

The oil is what it going to give the sugar scrub the most scent. Match the essential oil with the scent you are making, I suggest going to Whole Foods or getting your oils from a reputable source. Use 1 -3 drops.

5. Food coloring

Match the color with what ever scent you are making!

6. Container

I usually go to Walmart and buy a box of mason jars and they're pretty cheap. I have also used cleaned out candle jars, just soak them in hot water to remove the label and any wax and run it through the dishwasher. You could also check your local thrift store for some really fun containers. Get creative!

If gifting I also put a pretty ribbon around the jar or container and attach a little wooden spoon to scoop the scrub out with.

Recipes

Peppermint: sugar, olive oil, peppermint Castile soap, 1-2 drops of peppermint essential oil, 1 drop of red food coloring to make a light pink or mix 1 drop blue + 1 drop green to make a light mint color (add more sugar and soap to lighten the color)

Almond: sugar, olive oil, almond Castile soap, 1-2 drops almond essential oil, no food coloring

Lavender: sugar, olive oil, lavender Castile soap, 1-2 drops lavender essential oil, 1 drop red + 1 drop blue food coloring to make purple ( add more sugar and soap to lighten the color)

Rose: sugar, olive oil, rose scented Castile soap, 1-2 drops rose essential oil, 1 drop red food coloring to make light pink

It can be a bit pricey to begin, but a bottle of pure Castile soap and essential oils will last a while and make a ton of sugar scrubs! Also, you know exactly what is going on your skin (which is your largest organ system) and goes directly into your blood stream.
