What does clean beauty even mean??

"Clean Beauty is defined by products that are mindfully created and produced without any proven or suspected toxic ingredients. Clean Beauty products include ingredients ethically sourced and are made with the health of our bodies and the environment in mind."

(Straight copy and pasted that from a quick google search, but it was the best simple definition I could find)

A few weeks ago I had the chance to get together with a friend of mine, Sallie, who sells Arbonne. Their motto is "Healthy living inside and out" which shows through their wide variety of products from makeup to skincare to nutrition. Arbonne's products are made from pure, clean botanical ingredients and they're vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, and soy-free. The company uses European standards which are much more strict than American and they're a cruelty free company as well. They have a 2,000 ingredient list that is not allowed in their products but the top 20 are:

- Animal products or by-products

- Artificial flavors and sweeteners

- Formaldehyde-donating preservatives (a known human carcinogen)

- Hydroquinone (a skin lightener)

- Parabens (linked to cancer)

- Petrolatum (linked to cancer)

- Phthalates (linked to endocrine disruptions and birth defects)

- Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) (causes skin irritation)

- Synthetic fragrances and dyes

- Triclosan (causes skin irritation and is bad for the environment because of bioaccumulation)

- Ethanolamines (MEA/DEA/TEA) (

- Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)/Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)

- Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCT)

- Gluten, Peanuts and tree nuts, soy, High fructose corn syrup, Canola Oil, Trans Fats

- Talc (can be contaminated with asbestos fibers which possess risks for respiratory toxicity and cancer)

I am trying to find cleaner products that are affordable, which is seeming to be kind of difficult, but sometimes you have to make your health a priority and choose to make safer and cleaner choices for yourself.

I love makeup, but as an environmental science major I can not deny the fact that a lot of makeup and beauty products have lord knows what in them and they bioaccumulate in the environment not only affecting our human bodies negatively but other flora and fauna.

I am no expert, but I am trying to educate myself on what I should and shouldn't be putting on/in my body. Did you know your skin is your largest organ?? Everything you put on your skin gets absorbed and directly goes into your bloodstream! crazy I know.

Sallie did my makeup and snapped some pics for me, making me feel super glam but I do want to share a few of my favorite products she used on my face!

If I had to choose only 3 beauty products to use for the rest of my life, a brown pencil would make the cut because you know those brows have to be fleeky. This one does the job and has a brush on the other end which is always a plus!

For starters this powder smells amazing! It also has the pretties bit of shimmer that you can only see when the light reflects, I was obsessed! When I am in a hurry I somehow always end up accidentally getting loose powder all up my nose *palm smacks forehead* but I wouldn't be too mad about this one because its cleaner.

This guy is new, and wow the colors were beautiful! I recently started contouring and with summer coming up this palette has everything you need to have a gorgeous glow- it has blush, highlight, and bronzer.

Primer is so important, especially if you're like me and you're super busy all the time so you need your makeup to last. This one is super light and didn't make me feel like my pores were crying for help.

Sallie literally did a full glam look on me and it lasted! These are just some of my favorite products, but I am going to be researching other brands too. Dm her on instagram if you're interested in the brand or buying @sallietipton
